Target Audience Interview.

From doing interviews, I have discovered that people who listen to Alternative Rock tend to enjoy creative hobbies such as playing instruments. Also, the most commonly listened to band of this genre is Green Day. In a music video, people prefer a narrative as well as performance to give purpose to the video. they would also like the video to relate to the song or lyrics, so they can make sense to the relationship between the song and video. People who listen to this genre also dislike mainstream music, or what is in the charts. They are bored of seeing Taylor Swift like videos, where it is very cliche, unless it matches the song well. From the video above, the clothing that Dan and Callum are wearing clothes which reflect to the 'over all' target audience member profile, with wearing dark colours and beanie hats.

Target Audience Research.

By taking the Social Class test on BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22000973) as if i was a member of my target audience, I was able to discover what social class my target audience are likely to be in. I, as my target audience came back as 'Precariat', which is the working class.

Target Audience Research.

Using the website http://www.uktribes.com/ I was able to look at my target audience of 'Alternative' and their interests.

Alternative Tribes are driven by the need set themselves apart from the mainstream. From candy-hued hair to sleeve tattoos and multiple piercings, they’re determined to be different – but do it together.

Lucky for them, Internet culture means the alternative lifestyle has never been so accessible – or so popular. Getting acquainted with the 70s punk rock scene, The Strokes’ ‘Is This It’ or Skrillex’s latest remix is just a click away. Though most Tribes are fluent in digital, the Alternative Tribes in particular define their tastes, friendship groups and activities online more than anyone else.

Alternative Tribes are passionate about music, sharing an appreciation for live music, independent record shops and grass roots talents – it’s all about authenticity and being ‘real’. Unusually, Tribe members will buy music to support the artists they love and a dedicated merchandise and gig goers. Rather than rebelling against specific objectives, the Alternative segment is motivated by a need to be themselves, nothing more, nothing less…

Young Alts are just starting out are are voracious consumers of every source of Alt inspiration they can get their hands on, from Kerrang! to Neflix and Spotify…

Skaters are one of the few activity-based Tribes, enjoying their new cool status as Skater trends become embraced by the Urban, Leading Edge and Aspirant Tribes.

Emos and Scene Kids are both motivated by US rock scene and Americana icons, yet differ in terms of their outlook. For Emos, it’s about expressing yourself through music, while Scene Kids are more preoccupied with having fun and boozing with mates.

Hardcores have a serious affinity with a screaming genre of punk and the straight edge scene – wearing their distinctive tribal tats and turn-up look with pride.

Real Gamers are masters of the digital world, its languages and codes of conduct – don’t underestimate their influence!

Nerds are having their day – the Internet gives them unparalleled access to pop culture and Nerd icons are taking over screens around the world.

Favorite brands - Hot Topic, Doc Martens, Blue Banana, Kerrang, NME, DC, Rockstar sound TV, Grindstore.

Stay With Me- You Me At Six Lyrics.

"Stay With Me"

You've got a lot to say for the one that walked away
I give, you take
It's the way it's always been
Oh, how do I know if I should stay or just go?
The bottom line is this way that I'll never know

Stay with me (stay with me, stay with me)
Stay with me, oh (a-woah, a-woah, a-woah...)

You've got a lot to say for the one that pushed me away
I give, you take
Somethings, they never change
Just change

Stay with me (stay with me, stay with me)
Stay with me

I never knew that I could be this way
I never knew that I could walk away

These things take time to grow
It's been said that time heals woes
But no, I won't be controlled
And so the story goes

Stay with me (stay with me, stay with me)
Stay with me

And now I know that I can be this way
And now I know that I can walk away

Early Ideas.

The song I have chosen is 'Stay With me' by You Me At Six. This band has genres. These genres are British Rock, Alternative Rock and Pop Punk. For this project I have chosen to work alone.

Asking The Artist's Permission.

Over Twitter, I asked @youmeatsix, the original artist to the song I have chosen, if i could use their song, to create an original music video for my coursework.

Generic Conventions of Alternative Rock.

The Three Types Of Music Videos.

Performance Based Video-
These are music videos that feature the artist/band/group performing the song through most if not all of the video. It's probably the easiest to do on a budget provided you can get a suitable location for filming. A good example of this is would be "Best of You" by The Foo Fighters. The video for this is mostly performance based with random footage presumably licensed from elsewhere.

Narrative Based Video-
A narrative based music video contains mostly footage that attempts to tell a story through the moving image.  Usually involving actors, the story is sometimes linked to the lyrical content of the song, but this isn't always the case. This type of music video tends to be popular for a song that's featured in a movie and you will often see scenes cut into the music video. A good example of this is "CU When You Get There" by Coolio. A good narrative based video to check out would be "Always" by Bon Jovi.

Concept Based Video-
This is a style of music video that is based around a single concept or idea. These types of videos end to be fairly unusual or utilize a particular editing or filming technique. It's not often you get a purely conceptual music video as the commercial world demands things to be a bit more accessible but a great example is "Monkey Drummer" by Aphex Twin.

Most videos however, aren't so clear cut as to have one set type. Usually videos will incorporate a mixture of these elements such as a performance by the artist alongside narrative footage. A good example of this is "Black or While" by Michael Jackson.
